Children get excited to show off new dance moves during the grand finale and tend to come out of their shell. It’s all about exposure to the arts.” – Andrea Cody, Founder of Dance Houston.
This past Friday I attended Dance Houston’s 9th annual “An Evening with YOUR stars,” downtown at The Wortham Cullen Theatre. I enjoyed the dancers talent and was equally impressed with their tribute performance to Michael Jackson. Afterward, I spoke with the founder of Dance Houston, Andrea Cody, along with one of her long-time students Janetra Davis, about the “No Limits” summer dance camp. Andrea said she came up with the idea to have a well-rounded summer program several years ago for children with a passion for dance. The “No Limits” dance program is held every summer and the students are taught every style of dance ranging from hip-hop to contemporary. At the end of the program, they put on a spectacular show displaying their moves for family and friends to see.
Janetra is twelve-years-old and has been a student at Dance Houston for the past five years. She was almost seven when she joined the program. Her favorite styles of dance are ballet, modern and hip-hop. She looks forward to the summer camp every year and enjoys learning different styles of dance. What Janetra loved most about this year’s dance camp was, of course, the Michael Jackson tribute. She says she wants to continue dancing and make it a career just like her heroines Misty Copeland and Lauren Anderson.
Does your child have a passion for dance? Need them more involved with activities during the summer months? Dance Houston is a great organization which offers an enriching summer program for ages 4-17. Your children can enjoy their time off from school while meeting new friends and staying active.
