Legendary singer and entertainer, Janet Jackson accepted the 2018 Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday. She is the first African American woman to receive the Billboard Icon Award.
Janet was introduced by popular singer and entertainer, Bruno Mars whose musical performances often imitate the style of Michael Jackson. Janet performed some of her most popular hits before receiving the prestigious award.
Present in the front row was Janet’s mother Katherine Jackson and older sister Rebbie. It was nice to see Janet (the youngest member of the Jackson family) still command the stage at 52. Let’s not forget that the “Control” singer is the only artist to have 18 consecutive Top 10 hits on the Hot 100 and she doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.
After her performance, Janet addressed the crowd during her acceptance speech where she spoke about the strength of women and God.
“Thank you Bruno, thank you Billboard…” she started before having to pause due to the overwhelming “Janet” chants that erupted.
“I’m deeply humbled and grateful for this award,” she continued. “I believe for all our challenges, we live in a glorious moment in history. It’s a moment when, at long last, women have made it clear that we will no longer be controlled, manipulated or abused. I stand with those women and with those men equally outraged who support us in heart and mind. This is also a moment when our public discourse is loud and harsh.” Jackson ended her speech by thanking God and telling fans that “everything we lack, God has in abundance.”
