We had a chance to speak to Lance Gross by phone leading up to the television premiere. His movie character, a noticeable departure from his previous comedic talents as Calvin from Tyler Perry’s House of Payne or the good guy drama roles he’s played. Lance had this to say when asked what attracted him to the role of Dino? I think it stretched me as an actor. You always want to grow doing films. Would he play similar roles in the future? I think so. I had a lot of fun with this movie.
However, the weight of playing such a character took a toll on the actor. It took me two weeks to truly get away from the persona of Dino says Lance. I remember my wife asked me a question and I responded in a way she didn’t recognize, obviously I didn’t realize I was still in character. There was also the time my little girl was playing next to an outside pole. I became irritated and told her to get away from it. Lance explains in reference to the movie’s portrayal of poles and dancers in the movie.
Ever the good-hearted person Lance said he kept apologizing to Niatia “Lil” Mama Kirkland when they filmed together. I’ve never hit a woman before in my life. Some of the scenes were intense and I felt bad afterwards. I wanted to make sure she was okay.
